ASCENSION DAY
May 10th, 2012 . by Jerry Leavell
There is a day in the Church that is often forgotten but could be the most important day in the establishment of the New Covenant church. Ascension Day should be celebrated just as Easter as this is the day Jesus gives final instructions to the disciples and then Jesus ascends to be with God in Heaven. The atonement is completed only when Jesus returns to be with God and then 10 days later the Holy Spirit is given to the apostles and the disciples. The Church forgets all about the 40 days Jesus spent with the disciples and the ascension to the right hand of God and the baptizing of the Holy Spirit. At least you do not often hear the Ascension and the giving of the Holy Spirit taught.
Jesus Appears to Disciples
Acts 1:3-8
AC 1:3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.
AC 1:4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;
AC 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
AC 1:6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
AC 1:7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
AC 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
ASCENSION
Acts 1:9-10
AC 1:9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
AC 1:10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.
AC 1:11 They also said, “ Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
Luke 24:50-53
Lk 24:50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
Lk 24:51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
Lk 24:52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
Lk 24:53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Why did God wait 10 days after the ascension of Jesus to the right hand of God before He bestowed the Holy Spirit on the disciples? Was it to determine if the Apostles and the disciples would continue to be committed to the teaching of Jesus? Was it to see if they were going to be steadfast in their love for God – not the pressure and fear of the Pharisees and to determine if the people were going to scare them away from the message of Jesus?
The bestowal of the Holy Spirit was a dramatic event complete with images as of tongues of fire touching each one who was in the Upper room. This may have occurred to get the attention of the disciples and Apostles so they would understand this was a special thing from God – the bestowal of the Holy Spirit was noticed by others in Jerusalem. The baptizing of the Holy Spirit is for those who truly have a righteous relationship with God and it may not be as dramatic but the filling of the Holy Spirit is a significant blessing allowing the ones filled with the Holy Spirit to do the ministry God has put before them as well as to help with their needs in the world.
Acts 2:1-6
AC 2:1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
AC 2:2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
AC 2:3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
AC 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
AC 2:5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
AC 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
The Holy Spirit God sent after Jesus ascended to the right hand of God is available today. It is a great experience to observe the Holy Spirit at work in those who truly are in the correct relationship with God. This same experience can be yours as well if you will study, understand God, accept God fully into your life, and separate yourself from the world. You can be in the world but you do not need to be part of the world. God through His Holy Spirit will provide protection and keep you in his stead if you only will allow Him to do so. (John 17:6-19)
